Saint Patrick High School Overview
This Roman
Catholic high school, located in St. Patrick’s Parish in Elizabeth,
NJ, is the oldest parochial high school in New Jersey. Founded in 1863, the school first trained
students in the commercial arts. The sisters
of Charity undertook the venture to convert the two-year school to a four-year,
full-time high school offering both commercial arts and college preparatory
courses. In 1882, a group of dedicated
nuns, under the direction of Dean Gessner, provided the early development of
what is now St. Patrick High School.
In 1895, the
State of New Jersey
accorded to the school both full recognition and special commendation for its
standard of academic excellence. Under
the strong leadership of Sister Dorothy Jose, S.C., Principal 1968-1992, and
current Principal, Joseph Picaro, St. Patrick prepares for the 21st
Century with dedication to academic excellence in a Christian atmosphere.
The present
building, located on the original site, is adjacent to St. Patrick’s Church. Students, faculty, and alumni are steeped in
tradition and proud of the school’s accomplishments.
St. Patrick is fully accredited by the Middle States
Association for Colleges and Schools.
